What is Lent?
Lent is a 40-day period that precedes Easter in the Christian calendar. It symbolizes the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert fasting, praying, and reflecting. For the faithful, this time represents a moment of penance, charity, and spiritual reconciliation.
When does Lent start and end in 2025?
In 2025, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5, and ends on Holy Thursday, April 17. After this period, the Paschal Triduum begins, culminating in the celebration of Easter on Sunday, April 20.
Why is it 40 days?
The number 40 has great biblical significance. In addition to the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert, it also appears in episodes such as the 40 years the people of Israel wandered in the desert and the 40 days of the flood. This number is associated with purification, preparation, and spiritual renewal.
Curiosities about Lent
- Not all Christians observe Lent the same way — traditions vary among Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants.
- The practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays is common, especially among Catholics.
- The term "Lent" comes from the Latin *quadragesima*, which means "fortieth".
- During Lent, many churches promote retreats, confessions, and special moments of prayer.
How to live Lent?
Traditionally, Christians are invited to practice three pillars during Lent: fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. In addition, it is a favorable time for personal reflection, reconciliation, and acts of solidarity. Many people also choose to give up habits or addictions as a form of sacrifice and self-knowledge.
