More than Three
Although known as the Three Marys, in reality, the constellation of Orion, where they reside, has seven main stars. The three brightest, aligned in sequence, form the famous asterism that enchants the world.
The Arabic names Mintaka, Alnilam, and Alnitak, meaning "Belt", "Pearl", and "String", respectively, were given to the stars in honor of the position they occupy in the constellation, representing the belt of the legendary hunter Orion.
The Three Marys serve as a natural compass in the night sky. Through their position, it is possible to locate other constellations and even estimate the time of night.
Visible to the naked eye in both hemispheres, the Three Marys are a universal symbol of unity and hope, inspiring artists, poets, and navigators for ages.
Gods and Heroes
In Greek mythology, the Three Marys represent the daughters of Atlas, guardian of the sky, or the sisters of Phaethon, son of the Sun god. In Christian tradition, they are associated with the three women who visited the tomb of Jesus.
Science Behind the Beauty
The Three Marys are blue stars, much more massive and hotter than the Sun. Located about 1,500 light-years from Earth, they form a triple star system interconnected by gravity.
Astronomers believe that, in millions of years, the Three Marys will separate, forever changing the celestial panorama we know.
The Three Marys have inspired works of art, poems, songs, and even space expeditions, establishing themselves as a timeless cultural symbol. To appreciate the beauty of the Three Marys, just look at the night sky in areas with little light pollution, especially during the summer.
